Vesha
Hindi rendition of the play was the winner of Sanhita Manch Playwriting Award 2020
Vesha is rooted in the Gujarati folk tradition of Bhavai. It is the story of a conflict between two heads of a Bhavai troupe, a father and a son. On the same night, they both decide to stage different ‘Veshas’ (A role/A play)—one set in the fourteenth century, another set in modern times, thematizing caste oppression.
Production/Development History
Vesha was developed as part of the first edition of Ideas Lab, a workshop organized by Indian Ensemble, Bengaluru, in 2019. It later received a staged reading at Studio Tamasha, Mumbai. Its Hindi rendition won the Sanhita Manch Playwriting Award 2020, and was later also aired as an audio podcast.
